consideration made his decision easier. john kerry could end up a fabulous secretary of state, someone to make this country truly proud. he lost the presidency by a single state in 2004, then went on to become a deeply effective chairman of the senate foreign relations committee. he projects a grace under pressure that we see in the president himself, a noble attribute most of us take as quiet courage. as embarrassing as it is to admit, he is one of the few top politicians in this democratic country to master foreign languages. not a small talent in world diplomacy. i like kerry because he's had the guts to run for office just like hillary clinton. he's had the nerve to stick his neck out and ask the voter to like him or not like him, to trust him or not trust him. that to me is the key to true democratic government. i've said so before. i hope the president makes him his secretary of state. it would be the first strong move to building a powerful second term cabinet, to building the team that will, with god's blessing, take barack obama into global history. we americans need

conflicted about whether he wanted susan rice or maybe somebody else, maybe senator john kerry of massachusetts, to put in that secretary of state job. well, if it was a contest in the president's mind between susan rice and john kerry for that big job, for who would be the best successor to secretary of state hillary clinton, well today at least the binary competition between these two was settled with that letter that nbc news broke the news of today. that letter from susan rice to president obama. "i am highly honored to be considered by you for appointment as secretary of state. i'm fully confident that i could serve our country ably and effectively in that role. however, if nominated, i am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive, and costly to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities. that trade-off is simply not worth it to our country. it is far more important that we devote precious legislative hours and energy to enacting your core goals. the position of secretary of state," she says, "should never be politicized.

nod for secretary of state perhaps as early as next week, wolf. >> it does look like john kerry now is certainly the front-runner to be the secretary of state. he's the chairman of the foreign relations committee. there was some speculation he could be the secretary of defense although i think his preference has always been secretary of state. the president needs to put together his new national security team in the coming days in order to get confirmation of all of these individuals in january so they can get going by the time he's sworn in for his second term on january 20th. right now john kerry, if he becomes the nominee to become secretary of state, there's also speculation that chuck hagal could be nominated to be secretary of defense. a lot of speculation about the cia director. that position is open right now and a lot of speculation about the secretary of the treasury who has a lot of national responsibilities as well. what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, it's my understanding that senator kerry is the odds on favorite to be secretary of state but he has told people tha
